In the spring of 2005, an ad hoc committee of representatives from 6 centres went forward with an application to Status of Women Canada to fund an effort to revive and re-establish the Ontario Association of Women’s Centres, including a provincial conference. We are pleased to announce that the application was successful.

The purpose of this 18-month project is to bring together women’s centres to develop a long-term advocacy strategy for the OAWC, and to build ties with other women’s advocacy associations and coalitions in Ontario and Canada.

In the summer of 2006, women’s centres across Ontario were invited to participate in a survey designed by OAWC to identify the multiple needs of women across Ontario. The survey would lay the groundwork for a series of meetings intended to initiate dialogue and planning amongst women's centres in four designated regions (North, West, Greater Toronto Area, and East).

A series of regional meetings were planned for October and November of 2006, to be followed by a provincial conference in February of 2007. The intended result is the development of policy statements and action strategy on issues identified by the Association membership.

Through the survey, regional meetings, and provincial conference, the Ontario Association of Women's Centres assures a strong, unified, and mobilized voice for women's centres representing a diverse population of women across Ontario.
